Tiki

Description: Tiki culture is a celebration of tropical escapism. It's a longing for the time when Pacific islands were still exotic locales that inspired Donn Beach and Trader Vic to create their own versions back home. It all started in 1934 with the first Don the Beachcomber tiki restaurant, and was rejuvenated in the mid-90's with the printing of The Book of Tiki by Sven Kirsten. Pull up a chair, sip your Mai Tai, and study the tsantsa-covered ceiling while listening to the sounds of the Hukilau.

What is tiki: Things that are tiki: Tiki mugs. Tiki bars. Tiki cocktails. Aloha shirts. Luaus. Witco. Oceanic Arts. South Pacific culture. Trader Vic's. Don The Beachcomber. Martin Denny. Les Baxter. Mai Tais.

Things that arent tiki: Hot rods. Lowbrow Art (Rat Fink et al). Surf music. Jimmy Buffet. Margaritas. Science Fiction.

GENERAL RULES of the community: -Remember the Aloha -Trolls will be sacrificed to Pele -A basic difference of opinion is not a good reason for a downvote -Spam: the canned meat product = Good Spam: the repeated self-promotion without interaction = Bad -No political discussion

Hello everyone, as a member of the r/tiki subreddit for quite a long time, and after the Reddit drama, I figured why not give the tiki folks a place to share in the fediverse. This community is unapologetically inspired by r/tiki as you may have noticed from the description and guidelines. I can only hope for those who jump ship from Reddit can feel they have a safe harbor here.

Aloha.

I've been meaning to check out the fediverse, so this looks like a good place to start. How are the mod tools here? Good tooling is going to be critical to persuading mods to try moving communities.

I might go ahead and spin up a private server at home this weekend, to see what's possible.

Haha! You beat me to it! I started the tiki community on lemmy.ml. It keeps going down, but Lemmy.world seems to be staying up for the most part. Great job! Definitely subscribing! Where you from? I'm in Long Beach, Ca.

Cool! I only discovered the whole "tiki" culture thing a couple years ago when I built my tiki bar in the back yard and started researching it. Now I'm totally getting into it. I'm not a big drinker, but I do like fruit drinks and a relaxed vibe wherever I'm at. And hawaiian shirts are fun. I've always been a huge fan of polynesian art and culture. So that kind of fits.

I haven't been to any tiki bars in real life except for The Secret Island. We've got kids, and it's tough to get time away for just the two of us.
