Is it just that members of the same species are better at picking up on the differences from the thing being imitated that this camouflage doesn't work against mate pairing to the point of extinction? Intuitively it feels like this poor moth would spend large amounts of time investigating/courting actual dead leaves, or just constantly flying past potential mates without even realizing it.
