I play exclusively on Nintendo Switch, if that matters, and upon picking back up after around three months of terrible work/life balance I find Switch players get nexus missions! Anyway, spent my quicksilver and just completed starbirth today and was wondering if there’s any good (and not an interminable YouTube video) advice on getting upgrades? I’ve got a bunch of living frigates and have been using them exclusively to pick up upgrades that way. I’ve also seen some 3 year old posts about just pulsing for random encounters that may drop upgrades but am only just now going to try that for a bit. Is that really the only two ways to get living ship upgrades? Sorry if this is a dull sort of question, I may have 250 hours in but I’m more of a wander around seeking novelty type player so a lot of obvious stuff escapes me unless it happens to be something I read a post about.

Iirc, you send those organic frigates out on freighter missions... and upon successful completion of each of those, you get a (high) chance it'll include an item which you then 'extract' to a random upgrade. Been a few months since I messed with that mechanic so might not be remembering it exactly

Those are the only two ways I know of to get living ship upgrades! In my experience, my living frigates were returning with a psychonic egg (the item you dismantle into a living ship upgrade) after nearly every mission, so it didn't take much time to fully kit out the ship, but YMMV.

I've noticed that on some missions I'm getting multiple eggs and storage enhancements and this could just be down to most of my organic frigates being tier C at this point (but gradually they're getting better) the upgrades are also tending to be tier C. The few space encounters I've had snagged an S and an A (as well as a couple C's). It's certainly slower going compared to just buying upgrades, feels more satisfying though.

Playing on Switch I don't see other players ships at all but I do wonder, how popular are living ships, like I'm sure most folks have one but are they common "daily drivers" or are they more of a have it just to have it ship?

Yeah, you are at the mercy of RNG a bit, similar to getting good X class upgrades on regular ships. I like that frigate missions allow you to grind these in the background, while doing other stuff though!

I reckon players have a type of ship they love and will stick by. There's probably a minority who swear by living ships (or solar ships, or interceptors, etc), but most just have one in the garage. I found it a nice chase for a while, but I'm back to my favourite fighter as my main ship!

Whoa whoa whoa, I can craft spewing vents from sac venom and living slime?! Is this still a thing? Away from my game at the moment so I can’t try, but this seems like a way to just craft and craft until I get some sweet S class tech!
