Hong Kong lost their fight against their oppressors, sadly. It's now a police state run under authoritarian rule, slowly but surely erasing every shred of the freedoms and uniqueness they had.

Not really a tourist destination any more, hardly surprising :-(

Which, surely, explains why tourism in the rest of the Bay Area is shooting up?

the food scene in hk has collapsed. there is no longer any nice food to eat. everything is the same mainland china cuisine, which everyone hates. tasteless, oily, bland and sometimes very nauseating. there is not a single world class chef which supports this cuisine, yet the mainland china government had ordered that it be the only cuisine on offer. Lots of restauranteurs have been disappeared for offering anything different.

While there is a political component to it, the real issue is that the HKD is too strong now and the cost of touristing in HK is very visible.

A route back? I doubt China is willing to free Hong Kong just to save tourism.

Hong Kong is a part of China. Always was, always will be Chinese land. The British Empire had failed, they stole the land but under Chinese might they ran away.
