Same thing, just word play. One is official. You wouldn't expect to see a discussion of taters in a science journal, but you could be asked to bring tater salad to the cookout.
Opossums (usually pronounced as βpossum but the o actually isnβt silent) are the marsupials that live in the Americas, the most familiar of which being the Virginia opossum. Possums live in Australia.
