Likely the latter. RiF probably uses the free x amount of uses of the API while logged in users are directly seen as "premium" API users.
But other than lurking and manually searching the subs I see no reason to keep using RiF and generate traffic to them.
I hope Lemmy keeps growing but currently it's a sheer difference in content between here and Reddit.
They can still see the traffic is from the API and they aren't getting the ad revenue so I see it as another form of protest / nonconformity.
If they see people using the free API tier instead of switching to official app and logging in, that's a loss for them.
