Continuing my quest to fill in blanks in my classic sci-fi knowledge. This is one of those books that will stay with me. It packs a punch.

Agreed.
All of John Brunner's "Club of Rome Quartet" novels pack a punch.

Stand on Zanzibar (apocalypse by over population)
The Jagged Orbit (apocalypse by polarization and guns)
The Sheep Look Up (apocalypse by pollution)
The Shockwave Rider (apocalypse by internet and computer tracking)

I recently re-read all four of those again after many years and was very pleased at how much I enjoyed them again.
A very good non-apocalypse book by Brunner is
The Compleat Traveller in Black.
