It was marketing bs. Pretty sure it hasn't changed.

It kind of replaced a dowery. Proof that the man could afford to take care of the woman. But instead of gifting livestock or money they buy a useless rock that looks nice. As a symbol of commitment I think it works. But definitely the idea of 3 months salary is pure marketing.

Except a dowry goes the other way. It’s a gift to the groom from the bride or her family to help support her
