Hey guys. Am brand new to this game so forgive me upfront if this is an obvious answer.

I wanted to buy some characters or skins (not sure which they are preferred to be called) but wanted to make sure of something. If you buy a character or a killer: do the other players or your friends have to have that same character to play together?

You can play with/against anyone, in public as well as private matches, they don’t have to own the same character.

Okay thanks, that is what I was wondering.

One related question though. Am assuming that some of the killers play or give different bonuses (maybe that’s the wrong word). Are there any ones (killers specifically) that people avoid playing with online or does that matter?

All characters come with three perks (teachables) that can be unlocked for other characters when prestiging them (after level 50). Killers also have a unique powers.

Indeed some killers are less popular, right now one of the most hated ones is Skull Merchant. She was highly problematic and already got a rework but still most people don’t like her. Knight is another killer who doesn’t get much love.

Other than those, there are always people who like or don’t like to play against certain killers. Often it’s more a matter of how they are played and in some cases how good they are - a top tier Nurse or Blight can be miserable to play against, but I find a „normal“ Blight pretty fun face. Same for Nurse though a „decent“ Nurse is tough to find. Most are either bad and you can run circles around them, or Godlike.

To add on to the great answer you got, I have found as a somewhat recent player that there are a few youtubers who have excellent resources for players.

Otzdarva is of course, the largest DBD creator I know of. He has his own website with incredibly detailed and complete info for less experienced players. In particular he has some videos and guides on which killers and survivors have the best teachable perks to start out with.

Less well known, but not by that much Kyto has a great channel with videos about which teachable perks to go for.

A few other popular creators who I have less experience with their content or aren't specifically informative: Hens333, Deere, JRM, Eevoh, Ayrun, SpookyLoopz, Naymeti, Scott Jund

Thanks! I’ll check these out for some additional info. I don’t really play anything conpetitively, more just for the fun of it.

I have played a few matches now as Chuckey and had loads of fun. Did I win? Naw, but just the joy of seeing the little guy chasing people around the screen stabbing at them and laughing - had me rolling. I loved those movies when they came out years ago.

I may grab another one or two horror classics characters like as well.
