I’m not playing starfield, so I’m unsure of the save file structure. Just some troubleshooting ideas:
Do you have multiple saves for your original character and all those saves exhibit this behavior? If so, are any of those saves old enough that you know the issue wasn’t occurring already when you made the save? If both are yes, that seems very concerning, indicating that all that character’s saves became corrupted at the same time.
Does the game only allow you to have one save per character? If that’s the case, also very troubling, since you aren’t able to have saved to fall back on.
Does the game allow you to make multiple saves, but you’ve been saving over the top of your one save? If so, that sucks. Saves shouldn’t corrupt. in the future (in all games that allow it), keep some older saves in case corruption happens.
you can have more than one save per character and it seems that going back to a WAY old save fixed it, kinda ashamed that I didn't even think of this before lol but man it sucks that save was like 100hrs old and I reverted back by 20+ hours
edit: Also thanks for reminding me to rollback at least it's not a complete loss for this character.
I had a similar issue with Baldur's Gate 3, I save relentlessly but whatever went wrong it made my saves unloadable going right back near to the start of my game... losing 25+ hours of decisions was pretty crushing and made me not want to play at all.
It turned out to be due to an update for one of the mods I use, fortunately the mod creator changed his mind about blocking archived versions after I made my case and after a week or so of sad trombone noises everytime I tried to get into my save, I was able to restore my game. I hope you find a solution to this problem because who's to say it won't occur again. Are you using any mods?
Yeah I think I'm gonna have to start manual saving after certain quests. But no, I'm not using any mods. Ended up rolling to a save I had backed up way back, lot of lost progress but it is what it is.
I'm gonna edit the post to add what I think was the thing that started this bug.
