At some level its just math. If you make enough money where your opportunity cost per hour is about the value of a laptop. Yeah, just buy a new one.
That's not the major problem, the big problem is home security, not being confident to keep things at home, anxiety and worry over the loss.
Pretty much this. Like, the first part of "it's just a thing", I'll agree with that. It sucks, but it's an object. You can get another laptop.
What you really can't get back is the anxiety, the worry, the loss of feeling safe. I'm paranoid of keeping anything either in my vehicle or at work at all because I've had things stolen from both places, and this was YEARS ago. I barely keep things at home for similar reasons, and don't always feel safe THERE - I had a shitty landlord who just let her maintenance guys do whatever without proper notice, and I've woken up to strange guys in my apartment at 2AM as a result.
