It sounds like he was facing some kind of trouble and maybe thought this was his way to avoid it. Maybe he thinks he can trade military secrets for protection and a decent life? Who knows. Seems pretty strange.

Seems like he had either financial difficulties, or was going to face "military disciplinary action" in the us. How do i link a news article?
