Airplanes don't have conventional air conditioning. The best they can do is pump in more hot air.

I work for said airline as a mechanic. Unless the APU was on MEL, they should have absolutely ran the APU for air. I don't know which aircraft type this happened on but majority if not all can run Packs on APU.
