Thinking about diving back into Bluray and am looking for suggestions on a compact player.

Do you refer to a player+burner combination for a PC, or a regular player for TV's?

Regular player although I wouldn't mind burning too. Maybe the player burner combo is the way to go?

A player burner combo would require a PC and special software to be able to play commercial Blu-Rays to begin with.

I'm sadly not as up-to-date on Blu-Ray players as I'd like to be, but Sony has a small one although that misses 4K Ultra HD support (it upscales DVDs and regular Blu-Rays to 4K, which isn't the same as 4K UHD releases on their own). If you already own a "modern" video game console, starting with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One they got Blu-Ray player support, if you're also into video games. The PS4 Pro and Xbox One S and later got 4K UHD support as well.

I totally forgot Xbox One Supports Blu-ray... I have one collecting dust in my garage! Thanks for that reminder, small enough to not warrant getting a new box.

You're welcome! Keep in mind that the base "VCR"-sized Xbox One (not the S or the X variant) only accepts 1080p Blu-Rays, not 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs.
