The most important part of getting into hammocking is the ridgeline. Everything else is pretty much optional or interchangeable. But a proper set ridgeline will ensure consistent hangs in various locations. I'd recommend watching Shug's videos on YouTube on how to set one up.

You know, that’s not the answer I would have come up with first on my own, but it’s a great answer.

Well thank you! I've played with a couple different hammocks and suspension methods and shit but I find consistently the ridgeline to be the most important and everything else is just for convenience. I really like my whoopie slings but hanging with carabiners is essentially just as easy. Take away my ridgeline though and a 2 minute setup becomes 15 minutes of fucking with it and then realizing in the middle of the night that I'm still uncomfortable lol.

I've been meaning to set up a ridgeline, but most of my hangs are just a few hours at a time near the beach or something, and I wouldn't want the ridge in my way.

I've only hammock camped twice, and only one was a proper setup. But I'm going backpacking next week, and I think I'm gonna set up a ridgeline before I go, so it's one less thing to worry about

I usually don't find it cumbersome for my short hangs.

I did end up setting up a ridgeline for my trip and it was a game changer.

It makes setting up so much easier. Just get your height correct and everything else falls into place! Hope the trip was fun!
