Fediverse vs Disinformation

541 readers
83 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

How about we call a spade a spade?

Imagine for a moment that a magnitude 8 earthquake occurred somewhere in the world, and the Western corporate media refused to use the word “earthquake” in reporting it, instead talking ambiguously of a “tectonic incident” that had caused buildings to collapse and people to die.

Obviously, reporters would be called out for deliberate linguistic ineptness and a bizarre obfuscation of truth. And yet just such a verbal sleight of hand has been on display for more than 14 months in the Gaza Strip, where corporate media outlets continue to dance around the word “genocide” while the Israeli military carries out the systematic mass killing of Palestinians. The number of deaths has been fairly low past the initial 4 months

The number of RECORDED and DISCLOSED deaths. Because the IDF deliberately target the health care workers charged with preventing and documenting deaths AND the journalists who report the death tolls and otherwise expose the atrocities of the fascist apartheid regime.

If they actually wanted to kill them, why should that be the case?

They do and they are. See above.

Genocide also includes things other than actual killing

For it to be genocide, ONE of the following has to be the case:

  • (a) Killing members of the group;

  • (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

  • (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

  • (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

  • (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

    — Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Article 2[9]

I count one, maybe two, that Israel is NOT deliberately doing. To claim that it's not genocide is willfully obtuse to the same degree as Holocaust denial at this point.

specifically the killing seems questionable when looking at the numbers.

Apart from what I already explained in my first paragraph, the Gaza ministry of health has a policy of only counting the deaths of those they can positively identity as dying from direct military action, leading to inevitable under-counting as hundreds of thousands are either dead and not identified or dead via social murder.

TL;DR: your genocide-denying apologia doesn't pass the smell test and you should stop repeating disproved Hasbara talking points.

How can you spend so much time to write a reply but not spend any time actually reading what I said? Genocide it not was not the question. It might very well be one, but not because of the killing in the last 10 months.

Speaking of not reading, I STARTED my reply by refuting your disinformation about the killing slowing down. It hasn't. Accurate counting and reporting being made much more difficult if not downright impossible ≠ fewer people killed.

Your argument why substantial killing is still happening is "we do not know", do I get that right?

They are continuously expanding the front lines and opening new theaters of war. They are still destroying towns in Gaza. They are still claiming new land and displacing the current occupants. They are still bombing refugee camps. You're a fucking clown and no one here thinks you're debating in good faith.

Fuck off.
