May question ako, after the whole abandoning of this community.. Is there any hope for any move outside of the main social medias?
Intro
I've thought about this, since I've been exploring Mastodon, Bluesky vs Twitter/X.. Nostr. Any move outside of the main three, Facebook, Twitter/X, and Reddit.. fizzles out like this one. While there still remains somewhat of a community, such as the more popular communities in this fediverse.. I wonder what's the hope of switching away from the dominant socmeds if there is no homegrown movement here. I mean, look at me, I very rarely post, and look at Lemmy since any important info is almost always in reddit due to search..
Reflection
Don't get me wrong.. We all have lives outside of social media, (~~especially me~~), it's just.. very hard to come back and look at the multiple of dead communities, knowing you don't really have much to contribute. Like look at the many news posts, and random discussions.. Somebody has to take charge, and it's not going to be me.. I have so many things to do. My point is, there is low hope for any alt socmeds to reliably grow, if either the people that moved just.. move on from being chronically online or go back (to the big three), due to a multitude of reasons.
Conclusion
I think I'm just exhausted with my life, and that has permeated with my internet usage too. There's too many negative videos/posts that I have viewed, but there is much regret and procrastination outside. In conclusion..? I rambled for three paragraphs about Lemmy and the Fediverse, The Big Tech Social Medias, and the Philippines / Internet Culture..
Hope ya got something out of it!
There's no concievable way for Filipinos to move on from Facebook when it's the only platform that's mostly usable with free data. It's been a while since I had to use it, but iirc the experience was mostly complete sans Post media. Comments loaded photos just fine and most people uploaded the post's photos in the comments as well, as a courtesy.
So yeah, bar facebook making an incredible mistake, zuck's trojan is here to stay.
And Reddit just got lucky that they implemented New Reddit on the Web and first-party apps on Mobile right as it took off here in Ph, so most pinoys don't know what they missed out on Reddit's more focused, simpler times and with the relatively recent death of the 3P API.
As I read somewhere on the internet, Reddit does have an interest in expanding the Philippine userbase. But I think it's a vague plan at best and at some point, Reddit wont get the ROI they want.
Reddit isn't new or dazzling like Bluesky. It popped off in 2019 and the pandemic helped it maintain momentum but it has the same problems Lemmy has right now.
The biggest subreddits are chugging along but its not gonna foster any small communities the same way a Facebook group will. and I suspect most lurkers will just go back to facebook eventually.
I can attest to that.. I don't even use reddit / twitter that much so I can say I've moved to Lemmy/Mastodon, and if I continue lurking.. Well, I guess little would change, since I did try to at least participate but you can't really fault anyone there.
About the data thing.. Free data is important, huh? I've never considered that before since usually people always have some sliver of load... Facebook is just too embedded too as you said, I myself started on Facebook. Reddit and Twitter are less.. Yeah, I wasn't there when old reddit and twitter.. youtube lurker back then..
Basically.. yeah. I agree. The only way to permanently switch someone (like my other friends from Twitter to Bluesky) is if it's truly that bad and people mildly aware are doing that (at least.. younger people, IDK about older lol)
