Wikipedia page about the flag

The most unique feature is probably the emblem, of which Wikipedia says:

The emblem in the black is a boar's tusk—the symbol of customs and tradition but also prosperity. Its worn as a pendant on the islands—along with two leaves of the local namele tree. These leaves are supposed to be a token of peace, and their 39 leaflets represent the original 39 members of the Parliament of Vanuatu.

Before independence, Vanuatu was a French-British condominium under the name New Hebrides, and under this god-awful flag, which fortunately seems to be limited to sporting events:

Of course Tolkien devised an entire heraldic tradition for his books. Wikipeadia page about it

I found the flags here. I do not know where they originally came from: https://www.etsy.com/se-en/listing/1491383712/lotr-middle-earth-collectible-flag

Flag in the wild:

The flag takes the blue-white stripes from the Argentinian flag, and the red dragon is a Welsh symbol, although they both take non-standard forms. I'm not able to confirm it, but this may be due to the flag predating the standardization of the Welsh flag. A version using standard elements also seems to exist:

From Wikipedia about the county flags:

Liberia is subdivided into 15 counties, each of which is entitled to its own flag. Each county flag bears the national flag of Liberia in the canton. The county flags are flown at regional offices and together encircling the national flag of Liberia at the Executive Mansion.

The flags were introduced in 1965 by William Tubman for the purpose of promoting the counties as meaningful entities. Their design was inspired by Liberia's quilting tradition.

The flags have been the subject of widespread ridicule by members of online vexillology communities on social media platforms such as Reddit and Facebook. However, vexillologist Steven A. Knowlton argues that these discussions demonstrate a lack of understanding of the political and cultural context of the flags and of the material construction of flags from textiles as opposed to digital creation.

The flag has gone through some nice gradual evolution throughout history:

1903—1926:

Originally, the saffron color represented Hindus, the green Muslims, and white other religious communities. However, this is no longer the case, since the symbolism has been redefined to avoid sectarianism. They now symbolize courage and sacrifice, peace and truth, and faith and chivalry respectively.

Unusual with the Indian flag is that not only the graphical design carries symbolism, but also the fabric. An Indian flag should only be made out of Khadi, a special hand-spun cloth popularized by Mahatma Gandhi.

Hi,
Previously I have been running the bot on an instance that I host. Due to the age of my server I haven't been able to upgrade past 0.17.4 and the disk IO from the database is beginning to halt the entire server, so I'm going to move the bot onto lemmy.world so my crumbling server doesn't break the bot.
If the bot breaks now it's probably because of lemmy.world updating.

Happy !waveing

Wikipedia article

The colors started to be used to symbolize Belgium during the end of the 18th century, in defiance to the Austrian rule. The colors are taken from those used by the constituent regions of Belgium, corresponding to the red lion of Hainaut, Limburg and Luxembourg, the yellow lion of Brabant, and the black lion of Flanders and Namur. The order of the colors on the flag was not obvious though, and initially some other versions were used, e.g. the flag of the Brabant Revolution (1789-1790):

flag Brabant Revolution 1789-1790

and in the Belgian revolution 1830:

The official version has the unusual ratio 13:15, although flags with 2:3 ratio are also common. On the royal palace, a flag with the even more unusual ratio 4:3 is flown, in order to look more proportional from below:

Noteworthy is also the naval ensign of Belgium, which looks drastically different than the national flag: Naval Ensign Belgium

The co-official flags are called Flag of Artigas and Flag of the Thirty-Three and where used during the Uruguayan independence struggle. Indeed, the flag of the Thirty-Three reads "Liberty or Death".

The flag was red and depicted a white sun with a face. The sun had eight rays, representing the eight provinces that Spain had placed under martial law.

The Republic of Biak-na-Bato was the first ever republic ever declared in the Philippines. It was formed by The Katipunan which was a Philippine revolutionary society founded in 1892.

The republic, formed in 1897, only lasted for a month.

This stylized O is meant to represent both a maple leaf (symbolizing Canada) and the Peace Tower and Centre Block of the parliament buildings (symbolizing Ottawa). It is meant to be simple, but look festive, and to create a feeling of vibrant motion when flying.

The design uses the blue and green colours chosen to represent the new City of Ottawa. The blue is symbolic of rivers and waterways that are part of the Ottawa region, such as the Ottawa River. The large green areas speak to the large green space and quality of life in the area, as well as the forests, trees, and parkland within the city. It was adopted January 1, 2000 following the creation of the Ottawa "megacity".

Here's the Wikipedia article on the flag, which is quite extensive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Washington,_D.C.

The flag is based on the coat of arms of the Washington family, which had used it since the 14th century. Here's an 14th century stained glass window in Selby Abbey featuring the coat of arms:

Washington CoA stained glass

The flag is a much later creation, though. Not until the 1920s, discussions started about a flag for the city. Then, it was very close that Washington D.C. got a different flag. A 1924 proposal looking like was approved by the senate, but never passed into law.

Not until 1938, the question was brought back, and the current flag was adopted in 1939.

On a field of blue, the flag displays a yellow emblem of a crown and crossed arrows. This is the emblem attributed to St Edmund, king of East Anglia, shot with arrows and decapitated Vikings in 869. A shrine and cult later developed in Bury St Edmunds, and the emblem gradually came to represent the county as a whole.

Before this flag, they used this ridiculously long flag with the proportions 1:3

Note that the current flag was adopted two years before their independence in 2006.
