Since this community needs some content to get going I'm going to share tips and experiences of my own kidney transplant journey. This is one I recently encountered:

Typically US dental insurance only covers two cleanings a year. Once you receive a transplant and become immunocompromised your doctor may instruct you to get additional cleanings to prevent infections. Dental insurance wont be aware unless you tell them.

It was as simple as calling the number on the back of my insurance card and saying I received a transplant and need more frequent cleanings. They activated something on the backend and now I'm good for four cleanings a year with no change to my premium.

Related tip: Ask your doctor if you are supposed to take a single dose of antibiotics before your cleaning. I was not aware of this, but it is recommended during the first year of transplant.

Hello fellow transplant users. Considering recent Reddit events, I’ve decided to explore some Reddit alternatives. When I looked there didn’t appear to be a transplant specific community so I figured I would help by setting one up. I’ve created this same community “magazine” on https://kbin.social/m/transplant as I’m unsure of the stability of these sites as their user counts start to ramp up.

As this is a community run by users and not a for-profit corporation, we welcome your feedback to make this a better community.

Please read the rules on the side bar and abide by them. Please reach out to the moderating team if there are any issues and we will do our best to address them in a timely manner.
