Used RIF since 2012, never knew platinum was a thing until the very end. I hope the $3 is a good enough thank you for supporting my reddit addiction for over a decade.

Welcome to Lemmy! Here's a simple guide for those migrating.

Lemmy is pretty much Reddit, with one major difference—it has instances. Imagine you could take all of Reddit's backend server code, copy and paste it, and host your own version of Reddit. Cool! Now you're an admin of Reddit 2. If the CEO of Reddit 1 ever does something mind-numbingly stupid, you and your users will be unaffected*. Reddit 1 and Reddit 2 are akin to Lemmy instances. Each instance has their own users and communities (subreddits).

Lemmy instances all work with each other*. Think of it like email. If I'm a Gmail user, I can still email Yahoo addresses, because Gmail, Yahoo, and all other email providers use a shared set of rules. All Lemmy instances also follow a shared set of rules (called a protocol, not that you need to know that). That means you can post to other instances, subscribe to their communities, upvote, downvote, and do all the things you can do on your instance.

The Lemmy app you use has a lot of control over how this is all laid out, so if you're finding it confusing, try different apps. As a former RIF user, I personally like Liftoff, which you can get in the Play Store, but other popular options are Jerboa, Thunder, Connect for Lemmy, wefwef, and Summit.

There's plenty more to say, but that should be enough to get started. Feel free to post questions in the comments! I may not know the answers to all of them, but I imagine others will.

*Oversimplification.

Thanks for all the fish.

As title, been using RIF nearly daily since 2010 as it was always much better than the base reddit app. For context this app has been the first downloads for: my LG optimus 2x, Samsung galaxy s4, s5, s7, s9 and zflip3.

To the dev: thank you. You created a smooth, clean and reliable app that made all our lives easier and better

Welcome, to all of you trudging into Lemmy with mud on your boots. I just wanted to remind you real quick that Reddit isn't the C Suite at Reddit, Inc.

It's us.

It's always been us.

So gather by the fire at the hearth, warm your fingers and toes, and let's keep being us.

Except the guy with two broken arms. Don't get up until you've fully healed. We'll check on you from time to time.

I thought I had one more night with RIF. I guess not. Good bye, old friend. I guess good things never last.

Thanks for all the fond memories. Closest thing I've seen to a perfect app and one of the best purchases I've made.

Reddit was fun while it lasted.

It was one of the few apps I had on my first ever smart phone. An HTC Inspire. It never left any device I had from then on out. Forgot my old Google account from it and lost my first paid version license. So I bought it again.

When reddit started pushing ads and people were complaining, I had zero idea any of that was going on because I never used the website, only visited via this app. RiF stayed the same (visually and layout) for practically the entire time. So much so that the burn in on my older phones was RiF's layout.

Will sorely miss it. And I may visit reddit every once in a while to check on my favorite niche subs but it'll be like, maybe twice a week when with RiF it was multiple times daily.

Thank you, talklittle!

It was fun while it lasted, I got through a breakup, 5 years of being single, meeting a new partner and recovery from my brain trying to suffocate me. I got help and helped others. You were all there for it too. Let's do the same here. Pass the time, share the knowledge, and have fun.

I mean the dev is obviously free to work on whatever he wants, but I've had a Tildes account for like 2 years now, and honestly it never got any traction. Lemmy on the other hand is getting a lot of users, and it is desperately missing a non-buggy app.

Any specific reason?

I will miss it.

RIF was the first app I would download on each of my phones. It was among the first apps I paid for.

Used it so much my screen was burnt. I wouldn't have any other way.

Thank you for the decade plus of fun.

I really almost cried. So dramatic but fuck I'm sad. It was like an hour after I told him it's my last day on reddit.

Thank y'all so much for the years of good times and thanks to this community for welcoming us with such warmth.

Onwards and upwards 💖

There is a certain adVanced YouTube manager that can patch the APK of the official app to remove ads. Just my 2¢

You were my first and only access point to reddit I never quite understood the site when I'd visit it any other way. Quite perfect really. Thank you for your work. I hope you move on to great things. I just wanted to create an account here to say that.
