In the case of Palestine, the UN’s role, contrary to what many believe, has been catastrophic. While it is globally viewed as a victim of Israeli restrictions, particularly with the severe funding cuts to the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, it has in fact historically operated as a tool for the imperial and colonial ambitions of the global powers that invented it.

Perhaps the most chilling example of this came on November 29, 1947, when the UN formally approved a plan to partition Palestine, thus giving Zionist militias the green light to tear the state apart against the will of its people and the Arab world.

While it should not be considered the starting point for Zionist colonialism, the UN’s partition plan—referred to as Resolution 181—remains central to the map and reality of Palestine today. It served as the catalyst that set in motion the organized and systematic violent ethnic cleansing of Palestine between 1947 and 1949, and set the stage for the next seven decades of the same policies.

In the six months between the passing of the partition plan on November 29, 1947, and May 15, 1948, Zionist militias had already committed some of their most horrific massacres and expelled half of the total number of Palestinians that would eventually be displaced during the Nakba.

And while Palestinian and international objections to the plan were loud and clear, the world’s powers enforced it anyway.

deleting this because while it is important to note people being intimidated by the FBI, after thinking about it more, I think it is not worth having some of the links to more reactionary sources in the article

Former Defense Minister Accuses Israel of Committing War Crimes in Gaza (New York Times, 2024-12-01)

“At an event on Saturday, Mr. [Moshe] Yaalon denounced Mr. Netanyahu’s government for its actions in Gaza.

““The path they’re dragging us down is to occupy, annex, and ethnically cleanse — look at the northern strip,’ he said. He also said Israel was being pulled in the direction of building settlements in Gaza…”

“‘I’m speaking in the name of IDF commanders who are operating in the northern strip,’ Mr. Yaalon told the Reshet Bet radio station [on Sunday]. ‘They reached out to me expressing fear about what’s happening there.’

“He later said, in an apparent reference to the government: ‘At the end of the day, they’re perpetrating war crimes’ — while making clear that his issue was not with the soldiers themselves.”

Israelism (tankie.tube)

When two young American Jews raised to support Israel unconditionally witness the way Israel treats Palestinians, it changes their lives. They join a movement of young American Jews campaigning to redefine Judaism’s relationship with Israel and reveal a deepening generational divide over modern Jewish identity. Israelism sparked huge debate on American campuses even before the events of October 7, 2023.

It follows Simone Zimmerman, who visited Israel as a teenager, and Eitan who joined the Israeli army after graduating from high school as they discover the reality for Palestinians and radically revise their views. It includes interviews with academics and political activists, including Noam Chomsky, Cornel West, Lara Friedman and a former director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abe Foxman.

Contributors suggest the narrative that young American Jews are fed almost entirely erases the existence of the Palestinians through education and advocacy, sometimes involving groups that organise free trips to Israel partially funded by the Israeli government.

This film describes how influential this narrative is in shaping attitudes to Israel, not just in the United States but across the world.

Dutch see options for Netanyahu to visit despite ICC arrest warrant (Reuters, 2024-11-29)

“Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof on Friday said there could be options for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the Netherlands without being arrested, despite the International Criminal Court's (#ICC) arrest warrant against him.

“His words seemed to tone down a previous stance by his foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp, who last week in parliament said the Netherlands fully cooperates with the ICC, explaining that meant ‘we act on arrest warrants for people who are on Dutch territory’" 👎

“The Netherlands is also host nation to the ICC, which is located in The Hague.”

------

"It is with profound sadness that we confirm that a staff member of Save the Children was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis today, the second Save the Children colleague killed in Gaza since the war began.

"Ahmad Faisal Isleem Al-Qadi, 39, had worked for the administrative team in Gaza since May 2024. He was killed early Saturday afternoon as he was returning home to his wife and three-year-old daughter from the mosque... "

"Inger Ashing, Chief Executive of #SaveTheChildren, said:

"... We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms and demand an investigation. This war has been the deadliest on record for the killing of UN and aid workers, ... Violence against civilians and humanitarian workers is unacceptable and it must stop. There must be a ceasefire. There must be accountability.”

IDF strikes World Central Kitchen employee doubling as Hamas terrorist - The Jerusalem Post (2024-11-30)

https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-831370
———

“The IDF struck a vehicle on Saturday morning containing terrorist and World Central Kitchen (#WCK) employee Ahed Azmi Qudeih, who took part in the murderous October 7 massacre at Kibbutz Nir Oz, the military announced that afternoon.“

“The IDF emphasized that it was a civilian unmarked vehicle, and its movement on the route was not coordinated for transporting aid.“

“The WCK issued a statement saying it is pausing their operations in the Gaza Strip after the incident. They also said they had no knowledge of any individual in the vehicle having alleged ties to the October 7 massacre.”

Nan Goldin Challenges Germany on What Artists Can Say About Israel (NYT, 2024-11-25)

“A speech by the artist at an exhibition of her work was followed by protests from her supporters and an uproar in the news media.”

“Claudia Roth, Germany’s culture minister, said in a statement that she was ‘horrified’ by Goldin’s comments and the protesters’ actions. ‘As commendable as Nan Goldin’s art is, I reject the political activist’s intolerably one-sided views on Israel,’ she said. The demonstrators had ‘come to the museum not to see art, but to shout down the director,’ she added.”

“Others said [director] Biesenbach had only himself to blame. An essay in [crudely conservative] Die Welt newspaper calling for his resignation said that allowing Goldin a platform had brought about ‘the saddest, most undignified and shameful moment’ in the Neue Nationalgalerie’s history …”
