LOS ANGELES — LeBron James had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, Taurean Prince hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:17 to play and the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 106-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night.

Anthony Davis had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who beat the Clippers for the second straight time after losing 11 straight to their hallway rivals.

Norman Powell's 3-point attempt rattled in and out at the buzzer as the Lakers hung on to beat one of the NBA's hottest teams. The Lakers also won for only the fourth time in 14 games since winning the NBA's Inaugural In-Season Tournament.

Paul George scored 22 points and Ivica Zubac had 22 points and 19 rebounds for the Clippers, whose five-game winning streak ended. Kawhi Leonard scored 15 points, and James Harden had 15 points and nine assists in the childhood Lakers fan's first game against them since getting traded home to the Clippers, who have still won 14 of their last 17.

Neither team took a double-digit lead until Russell’s third 3-pointers put the Lakers up 92-82 early in the fourth. The Clippers rallied with nine consecutive points down the stretch, and they tied it on Powell’s three free throws with 2:19 to play while the Lakers went into a 2-for-7 slump with six turnovers.

But D'Angelo Russell found Prince for his big 3-pointer from the perimeter in one of his biggest shots since joining the Lakers. After Harden missed a jumper and James hit a clutch fadeaway, Harden kept it close with a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left.

Prince hit two free throws, but Zubac scored a quick basket before Austin Reaves missed one of two free throws with 4.2 seconds left. Powell had a decent look, but couldn't tie it.

Russell scored 13 points with three 3-pointers in his return from a three-game absence with a bruised tailbone for the Lakers, who had been on a three-season skid against the Clippers until they broke through with an overtime victory early this season.

The game was a franchise milestone for the Clippers, who played their final game as the “visiting” team in their own arena, barring a playoff series between these clubs. The two Los Angeles teams' final two meetings of this regular season will be “home” games for the Clippers, whose fans are usually outnumbered by Lakers supporters no matter which team is nominally at home.

The Clippers and Lakers have shared the building long known at Staples Center since it opened in 1999, with the Clippers finally becoming worthy rivals over the past decade after years of struggle.

Billionaire Clippers owner Steve Ballmer's Intuit Dome will open in Inglewood next season, finally creating an exclusive home for the franchise that has labored in the shadow of the Lakers' championship banners for a quarter-century of cohabitation.

With a spirited crowd enjoying the pageantry of a Lakers – Celtics clash on Christmas, it was Boston that raced out of the gate, scoring the first 12 points of a game they ultimately won 126-115.

The home team, who fell behind by 18 in that first quarter, rallied furiously to get within one point at halftime. LAL took a 66-64 lead early in the third period before Boston delivered a harsh response, outscoring L.A. 35-24 to close the quarter up nine thanks largely to 14 free throw attempts after LAL were caught early in the bonus. L.A. could get no closer than eight points in the final frame, and will have to wait until February for a rematch against their long-time rival.

“We had some really terrific looks at the rim … shots didn’t fall,” said Darvin Ham of the start. “We made it a game, but in the third quarter, we put them on the free throw line. Fourteen in the third after holding them to nine in the first half, and that really hurt us.”

“They were in the bonus for (most) of the third,” said Austin Reaves, “It’s tough to guard against a team that’s super talented and (in that position). We have to do a better job.”

Anthony Davis was fantastic in defeat, scoring a season-high 40 points*, plus 13 rebounds, four assists and one block while carrying as much weight as he could defensively. LeBron James didn’t have a typical shooting game, hitting just 5 of 14 attempts, though he did grab nine boards with eight assists.

*Not counting the 41 he scored in the In-Season Tournament Final.

After the game, Davis and LeBron both pointed to Boston utilizing Kristaps Porzingis as a weak side rim protector, with the Celtics blocking seven shots to just one from L.A. – the Lakers average 5.8 blocks per game, to Boston’s 6.3 – which proved to be a pivotal factor.

More generally, Reaves was asked about the team’s lack of cohesion, given all of the injuries and different lineups the Lakers have featured thus far, relative to a pretty consistent group that Boston has used.

“It’s not an excuse, but it’s hard to have that chemistry and that knowing factor of what you’re doing at all times,” said Reaves, who had 11 points and six boards off the bench. “Once we get that, we’ll be fine.”

Ham had to go to his bench early after Boston blitzed to the 12-0 start, with Reaves replacing Jarred Vanderbilt, and then Rui Hachimura replacing Taurean Prince in the new-look starting lineup that was 1-0 after a tough road win at OKC on Saturday evening.

That unit saw to a 9-0 close to the first quarter, cutting Boston’s biggest lead in half. The teams traded blows in the second quarter, before a strong close to the period featuring a pair of threes from Prince (5 of 12 for the game) and Davis (2 of 4), plus a short jumper from Davis that trimmed the margin to 58-57.

After the free-throw-heavy third period, Boston managed to hold off L.A. 27-25 in the final period, with each starter scoring at least four points in a versatile attack, while the Lakers got seven from Davis, and six from Rui Hachimura off the bench.

The Celtics had advantages at the free throw line, taking 28 to L.A.’s 21, and turned the ball over four fewer times (12-8) in a relatively clean game from a ball control standpoint. Both teams hit 13 3-pointers, and the Lakers grabbed two more offensive rebounds than the visitors (13-11).

Up next for the Lakers is a home game on Thursday evening against Charlotte, as they try to get back into the win column.

LOS ANGELES — The Boston Celtics were happy to share on Christmas Day, and it propelled them to a historic holiday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Led by Kristaps Porzingis with 28 points and 11 rebounds, all five starters had at least 18 points for the Celtics in a 126-115 win over the Lakers on Monday.

Jayson Tatum added 25 points, Jaylen Brown had 19 points and Derrick White chipped in with 18 points and 11 assists for Boston, which has won three straight and 12 of their past 14.

“Honestly, we all know that if we push the pace one of us is gonna get a shot. And I feel like when we have that energy and you know if I run to my spot and I run to my lanes I’m gonna get the ball, it just makes everybody do it and do it that much harder,” said Jrue Holiday, who had 18 points and seven assists.

Anthony Davis scored a game-high 40 points with 13 rebounds, LeBron James had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, but the Lakers have dropped six of eight since winning the inaugural In-Season Tournament.

“I don’t think we’re healthy right now. I don’t think we’re where we want to be to compete versus the top teams until we continue to get better and better, continue to work out habits,” James said. “For us, we’re still trying to figure our situation out as far as how we want to continue to attack each game, but we’ll get better.”

It was the third game on Christmas Day between the two most storied franchises in the league. The Minneapolis Lakers won in Boston in 1951, and Los Angeles was victorious in 2008.

The Celtics ran right over the Lakers’ starting lineup, scoring the first 12 points capped by a 3-pointer from Brown, and would lead by as many as 18 in the first quarter.

After trailing for the only time in the game early in the third quarter when Jarred Vanderbilt threw down a dunk, Boston ripped off seven straight points to regain the lead.

Boston successfully kept Los Angeles at arm’s length in the final quarter, despite Davis hitting the 40-point mark for the 40th time in a regular season game.

Every Boston starter had at least four points in the opening quarter and did it again in the fourth. As Porzingis noted, with some better shooting from 3, it could have been an even more emphatic victory. The Celtics ended up 13 of 42 (31%) from 3.

“Very happy about the game we had as a team,” Porzingis said. “And honestly we played really good basketball. We just did not make or we did not shoot what we normally shoot from outside. But other than that, I think we played really well.”

For the Lakers, there were too many mistakes elsewhere to take advantage of a rare instance where they were the better team from long range, shooting 40.6% from 3 (13 of 32).

Coach Darvin Ham ran off a list of errors nearly as long as Santa’s, the details he said Los Angeles cannot afford to get bored with if it wants to compete for a championship at the end of the season. They ranged from transition defense to rebounding to turnovers.

Davis brought up one of his missed free throws in the decisive third quarter as a little mistake that made a big difference.

“You always think about shots you could have made, defensive plays you could have made, rebounds you could have had, free throws I could have made, things like that that could have changed the game,” Davis said. “I missed a free throw in the third quarter and they end up getting a fast-break 3, and all I was thinking was if I make the free throw, that doesn’t happen.”

Both teams got a scare when Brown and James were shaken up in a collision with 4:02 left in the second. Brown was cutting back to the ball when he took a bad step and pulled up, leading to James kneeing him in the back. Each player was attended to on the court, with Brown going back to the locker room before returning to start the third quarter.

The Lakers (16-14) are home on Christmas Day to take on the Eastern-Conference-leading Celtics (22-6). The game tips off at 2:00 p.m. Pacific on ABC and ESPN.

Below are three things to know ahead of the matchup:

CHRISTMAS FACTS

Here’s all you need to know about the Lakers on Dec. 25!

  • The Lakers lead all NBA teams in Christmas Day wins with 24.
  • The Lakers and Celtics are meeting on X-Mas for the first time since 2008, which was L.A.’s first chance to avenge their 2008 Finals loss. The Lakers did indeed win, snapping a 19-game Boston winning streak, as Phil Jackson won his 1,000th game as a head coach. The Lakers improved to 24-5 (15-1 at home) with the victory, behind Kobe Bryant’s 27 points, nine boards and five assists, plus 20 points and five assists from Pau Gasol and a +17 on/off from Lamar Odom.
  • LeBron James is the all-time leader in Christmas points with 460, and games played (17), while being tied with Dwyane Wade (10) in wins. He’s also 2nd in assists (119), 2nd in steals (26, three short of 1st), 2nd in 3’s made (three short of first), 8th in rebounds (he’d move to 6th with seven boards) and 9th in blocks (he’d move to 6th with two blocks).
  • “It’s one of the best days the NBA has in our season,” said LeBron of playing on Christmas. “It’s always special, but more importantly it’s a day for being around family, being an opportunity for myself to be a giver, and give to my loved ones and people who supported me throughout my journey every single day since I began this, so it’s all about my family, my friends and my kids, my wife and my mom and so on. It’s a great for sports in general, especially for basketball too.”
  • LeBron had a big Christmas game for Miami against the Lakers in 2010, going for 27 points, 11 boards and 10 assists in a 96-80 MIA win, as the first player in 40 years with a triple-double on X-Mas. LeBron also had 31 points and 13 boards in a come-from-behind Cavs victory over Golden State after Cleveland had beaten GSW in the Finals the previous summer.
  • Other Christmas Day leaders: Bill Russell, 176 rebounds; Oscar Robertson, 145 assists; Shaq, 25 blocks.
  • L.A.’s single-game Christmas highs include Jerry West’s 47 points in 1963, Wilt Chamberlain’s 22 rebounds in 1970, and Nick Van Exel’s 12 assists in 1996.
LEBRON OUTSCORES HIS AGE

For the first time this season, LeBron James outscored his age in Oklahoma City on Saturday evening, going for 40 points just a few days before he turns 39, on Dec. 30. He did much of his damage in crunch time, scoring 15 points in the 4th Q, on 5-of-7 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers, plus three free throws, capping an 8-for-8 night at the charity stripe.

Those points were quite necessary for the Lakers, as LeBron’s teammates managed just seven collectively in the final quarter amidst a furious attempt at a comeback from OKC.

“Last time we came here on a tough back-to-back, started out well but we just lost energy, lost steam,” said LeBron. “Us having a day in between our last game (helped), and this was one of the first must-win games of the season for us, and we understand how well this team had been playing, but we were able to play a really good game on the road to close the road trip out.”

Scoring 40 points on only 20 shots is the mark of a remarkably efficient performance. LeBron, who’s finished nearly everything at the rim this season, actually missed several shots in the paint, going 7 for 14. But he compensated by being nearly flawless with his jumper, hitting 7 of 8 FG’s outside the paint, including a perfect 5 of 5 from 3.

“It helped us get this win against a very good team in the Western Conference,” concluded LeBron.

LAKERS LINEUP SHIFT

Prior to the game at Oklahoma City, the Lakers made a rather significant change to the starting lineup, inserting Jarred Vanderbilt in place of D’Angelo Russell, effectively moving LeBron James to the PG slot on offense, and making the team huge defensively.

“We added a lot of length from the perimeter to our wings, all the way down to our center in AD, we have the ability to guard multiple positions, switch a lot of actions, but more importantly we’re able to clean glass,” explained LeBron. “I thought when they missed shots, especially in the second and third quarters, that gave us an opportunity to score on the other end.”

For one game, at least, it worked quite well. Not only did the starters play well, but the bench trio of Austin Reaves, Russell and Rui Hachimura was terrific, totaling 47 points, with Hachimura’s 21 on 8 of 14 FG’s leading the way.

LeBron and AD were able to handle much of the offensive load with the starters while Cam Reddish, Vanderbilt and Taurean Prince battled defensively and on the glass, with the bench trio of scorers, plus Jaxson Hayes in limited 1st half minutes, overwhelming OKC’s second-unit defense.

Adding Vanderbilt to the starting group will help against Boston as well, with the Celtics boasting difficult matchups from one through five. He, Reddish and Prince can all rotate between Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, with LeBron and AD both capable of defending Kristaps Porzingis, or moving their feet with one of the perimeter threats. How the coaches choose to initiate the matchups will be telling.

Meanwhile, Boston doesn’t have a great matchup for Davis. Will they trap like OKC did? Will they try to survive with Porzingis backing off an opting to late-contest on jumpers? We’ll see!
