Still haven't found a dedicated handspinning community, but I'm hoping this will tempt some of y'all to the dark side 😉

I spun this last year, but haven't yet found a project worthy of it (open to suggestions!). Fiber is Merino wool, colorway is Tie Dyed Popsicles by the Wooly Witch, spun on my Babe's Fiber Starter wheel. It's about 15-16 WPI, so roughly a light fingering weight, and 170g. Planning to leave it a single since plying it might muddy those glorious, glorious colors, and that would be a travesty! 😍

Still a fairly new spinner, all things considered, and mostly self-taught, so I'm open to any constructive criticism and willing to answer any questions y'all might have! Thanks for letting me briefly invade your knitting space! 😁

Hi all!

Just checking in after last week’s discussion on community rules going forward. First of all I wanted to say thank you to everyone who chimed in, it’s a little awkward coming in as a new moderator so was good to see that people do care about the group culture and want the place to thrive.

The main conversation was around our approach to self-promo posts, and while specific wording of rules in the sidebar can always be tweaked the most important thing is that we have a clear feel as a community for what direction we want to go in. Happily, that was the case.

It was generally agreed that there’s a distinction between an active participant in the community just happening to post about something they sell, and accounts that post solely to sell stuff.

For examples of acceptable self-promo, think posting an FO from your own design and linking the pattern for sale, or something made from yarn from your hand-dyed yarn business, etc.

While mods of bigger communities struggle to check out the motivations of every single user and need to use more sweeping rules, in our case we’re small enough that it should be pretty easy to figure out by these criteria whether someone is just spamming or not.

What I’d ask from our lovely community members is twofold:

  • Report posts that you feel are uncomfortably promotional and not in keeping with the “vibe” of the community. I’ll use my best judgement from there.
  • Have patience. I’m in the UK so may not always be able to deal with reports instantly depending on your timezone. I’m also only human and may make incorrect decisions at first about whether something should be removed or not. We’re building this place together, and it necessarily involves a little trial and error and discussion along the way, but as long as we’re understanding and patient with each other we’ll get there.

So with all that said, here are the rules I’ll be adding to the sidebar today:

  1. All instance rules apply: see mastodon.world/about
  2. WIP/FO Posts should include pattern details (at least name, preferably link)
  3. Relevant self-promo from community members is acceptable but will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Exclusively salesy posts will be removed. (more info link will point to this post)

There was also a bit of discussion over old-school “tagging” of posts by adding [FO], [WIP], [QUESTION] etc to the title. In the absence of post flair on Lemmy, this could help people find just the content they’re most interested in.

This isn’t going to be a rule and is not something I’ll be enforcing, but I do personally like it and will be doing it in my own posts going forward. If you want to join, great, if you don’t…also great! We’ll see what the community consensus ends up being and it’ll either become part of the culture here or it won’t 😄

WIP Wednesday #1 (i.imgur.com)
submitted 1 year ago by [email protected] to c/knitting

Hi! I suggested to our lovely mod @[email protected] about starting a WIP (Work in Progress) Wednesday thread. That way we don't have to wait until we're fully done with a project to share it and we can encourage each other along the way 😄

Feel free to add to this thread with what you're currently working on 😊

I had to reaaally dig up a picture, as I'm the one with the ideas but actually really bad at taking WIP pictures as I usually knit late at night 😅

This was my first try at knitting in the round and even though every pattern warns about not twisting your stitches I actually didn't realize what it meant until I was several rows into my work. In the spirit of Bob Ross I decided to just roll with it, there are no mistakes, just happy accidents!

Pattern is the Meila Cowl from Ravelry: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/meila-cowl

Yarn used is Colors by Reves Derecho in #0837 (DK weight) and 5mm circular needles (unknown brand, my mother had them in her stash lol).

I haven't been knitting as much this year as I usually would, so it took me about a month to finish this. Super simple knit, but I'm glad it's done so I can start on the colorwork socks I've been excited to try. Pattern is Thermal Cap by Kate Salomon.

This is the Kala Tee by Pip and Pin, knitted in Socks Yeah! which is my fave solid colour sock yarn.

It was only made in summer 2021 so I have no idea why the photos are so potato quality, but here's a closer look at the yoke detail if you can see past me apparently trying to be "quirky".

Love it, wear it all the time, it goes with everything. Big recommend for this pattern!

Just sharing this one because I happened to be wearing it and realised how often that's the case 😄

What's your most worn (or used) project?

It's based on a gansey that our dad had commissioned; my brother wanted one too so I copied what I saw, modding for his size. I've learnt a lot from it, mainly that I never want to knit such a tight knit ever again. I'm so incredibly proud of it though, it just shows what perseverance can do

I stumbled across this link being passed around on Mastodon last night and since I know we have a few beginner knitters in here, someone might find it useful!

It is an email signup thing, but it's run by Tin Can Knits which is a long-standing well-known design brand so you should be in good hands.

Anyway that's it, just a quick share!

Ok so last night the very valid point was raised that our banner (and icon) are essentially the first stock image results for a search on "knitting". Shoutout to @[email protected] for picking up on that.

It hardly represents our budding little community of weird creatives, though, does it?!

My first thought was actually to make this a more communal project. Perhaps a collage of some of the top-voted projects that have been posted here so far. That way future joiners would be greeted with the work of essentially our founders, which I think would be nice.

But at least two of you have an insatiable lust for competition and seemed excited for a contest, so far be it from me to take that away from you 😉

Here's the plan:

  • Closing date will be a week from now, Thursday 27th July at 19:30 UK time.
  • My entry will be a collage as described above, so if you actually like that idea and want it to be official you can just sit tight (and maybe post some cool projects this week that you think should be in it).
  • I won't be offended if something else wins though, I just really like making collages.
  • The only mobile app I've found that even shows banners is Jerboa and I've no idea what size that is, but on web the full-size banner is shown at 968x240px and in the sidebar it's shown at 276x104px. Lemmyverse has them at 299x125px.
  • Entries / suggestions / weird AI art of lemmings with knitting needles for a new community icon also welcome, I have no bright ideas there as of yet.

Get any entries in as replies to this post, and you never know, maybe by this time next week some Lemmy contributor will have added polls!

This is the Thea top by PaulaM. I'm knitting it with Sandnes Line, which is a cotton/viskose/linen blend. This was supposed to be a quick knit to be worn this summer, but it took me ages to go through swatching - I just couldn't get gauge.
Anyway, there's still one and a half months of summer left and this baby is only half a strap away from top topology.

BTW, have you seen the VeryPink video on weaving in cotton ends? These ends are cut soo short! I don't know if I can bring myself to trust the process...

Hello! Long post incoming, but please do read and we'll get it all over and done with in one go 😅

So a lot of you already know that I've been appointed at least temporary mod while our community owner is inactive. I'll do my best to keep things ticking along while they're away, and we'll just see how things develop from here. Happy to report my mod status has now actually federated out to my own server so I'm able to pin things, hurrah!

For those I've not already chatted with, hi! My name's Michelle, I learned to knit in about 2013 and quickly became obsessed, and now do all kinds of crafts (including but not limited to the stitchy ones). I am also chronically online since about 2001, so should be able to deal with any mod reports within a reasonable timeframe, but as we grow if it's still just me I'll probably need to look for help from folks in other timezones.

You'll see me posting both from this account and from Mastodon as @[email protected] because being able to interact cross-platform is really cool, and also it helps spread the word about this place to the larger Mastodon knitting community!

Now, one thing that's been missing from the community so far is any actual rules being set (yes I can hear you booing me from all the way back there). I figure even though we're all lovely and self-governing at the moment, it's probably best to just have the common-sense stuff written down for future reference.

So here are my thoughts, feel free to chime in with your own:

  1. All instance rules apply: see mastodon.world/about <-- these can be summed up as "don't be awful and don't spam"

  2. WIP/FO Posts should include a pattern link or at least the name of the pattern & designer. <-- this isn't always possible and I'm not gonna give people too much grief for forgetting but it is quite helpful for people seeing the pics and thinking "ooh, pretty"

And that's about it! I'd like to know what you all think about allowing commercial posts, too. For example designers posting about their own patterns, the sticker shop post we had the other day, etc etc. Allow? Ban? Some rule that lands somewhere in the middle?

Suggestions welcome on this, as well as what you'd like to see from the community in general. Go forth and have your say!

Hi! I just learnt how to knit a couple months ago, when I started to attend a meetup group with my mom. I learned to crochet in school, but I always failed to learn knitting, maybe because I'm left handed?. But something clicked now that I'm an adult and I'm hooked. I'm mostly taking on smaller projects like hats and mittens, these are the first I made to give away to a friend for her little girl (3yo) but they ended up being too small lol.

Used free patterns found online, the mittens were done with crochet. I don't know what else to put in here 😅 So feel free to ask if I'm missing some important info here, please.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your kind words, I look forward to keep sharing my projects in such an encouraging and lovely community 💕

Hi everyone!! This is not my finished project, but I am working on emulating it for myself atm. This was originally posted by a redditor whose username I cannot recall, but I thought I would post it here (along with a link to their ravelry project page) because it is just too cute not to share.

I love how it manages to be both adorable and anatomically correct with that little shoulder hump :)

Some notes: this bear was knitted with thicker yarn (worsted weight) than the original pattern calls for, and thus requires larger needles (US size 6). The original poster mentioned both in their reddit post as well as their etsy review that there is some confusion in the pattern with doing the feet? So watch out for that.

Dunno about you but I never know where to put WIP projects so a lot of them end up on this dummy. I was just walking past and realised how well the colours match in this one-sleeved jumper I've been knitting and the bralette I've been sewing!

I figured, how often do you get to crosspost the same thing between knitting and sewing communities? So here we are lol.

Knitting pattern is the Justyna Jumper by Justyna Srock, and I've somehow been on with it for months even though it's a very quick knit, multicrafter problems and all that.

The sewing pattern is the Ellie Bralette from NH Patterns, it's definitely designed for someone 20 years younger and a lot less curvy than me, but on the other hand it's fun and it's reversible and I've made this plus an almost-finished matching skirt out of a 50p bedding set so you can't go wrong 😄

Didn't want to just lurk on Lemmy, so thought I'd re-share one of my favourite projects to date: a folklore cat sweater!

I made this as a present for my friend, who's a big Taylor Swift fan and a doting cat parent. Quick background: Taylor Swift wore a gorgeous white cable knit cardigan in one of her music videos. That came to be known as the Folklore Cardigan, and you could buy it as merch or recreate it with this free Lion Brand pattern. I also saw some pet versions, and knew my friend would love one for her cat!

I based my stitch counts off of a pattern generator. (At the time, this was a free pattern. It's now 2 dollars, so still great value. But I think a free Drops pattern in the small size would also have worked fine.) Then I rounded up/down to get a stitch count that easily fit the cable patterns from the folklore cardigan. Taylor's cardigan has applique stars, so I crocheted a couple using this video (I'd never crocheted before, but the video was just easy enough to follow).

My friend and I were really happy with the result! (Her cat less so haha)

It'd be a stretch to call it a pattern, but if you'd like to make your own, I wrote down my measurements, stitch counts and instructions to myself in my Ravelry project notes. Happy to answer any other questions!

My little sister is newly engaged, so it only makes sense to learn lace knitting and make her veil. (Don't worry, I won't come back in a year with a resentment post if she hates it). Currently my lace experience is one very simple triangle shawl.

So far, my plan is to do a bit of mix/match from the motifs in the following pi Shawls, as they're designed to play nicely together:

https://ravel.me/ez-100th-anniversary-pi-shawl-camping

https://ravel.me/ez-100th-anniversary-pi-shawl-gull-wings

https://ravel.me/ez-100th-anniversary-pi-shawl-hearts

I've got knit picks bare luminance, an undyed ivory silk to work with.

Am I setting myself up for frustration? Am I absolutely bonkers for this? I have about a year before the wedding deadline and I'm pretty sure she'll still be my sister even if I fail. Ive also signed myself up for a Shetland lace course in case that turns out to be a better (worse?) decision. Feel free to roast me, pls, I'm sure my fam already is.
