Consumer Reports unveiled the results of scientific testing of 28 dark chocolate bars for lead and cadmium.

The magazine said that while all 28 contained the heavy metals, 23 including chocolate from Dove, Godiva, Lindt, and Trader Joe’s contained potentially harmful levels of lead, cadmium or both for people who eat one ounce of chocolate a day.

Researchers gathered up 40 people and told them to either consume 200 grams of wild blueberries per day (blended into a smoothie) or control drinks without blueberries for one month.

Here’s what happened: The subjects consuming blueberries reduced their blood pressure by 5mmHg, which is about what a prescription hypertension drug can do. Blood vessel function improved and cardiovascular disease 11 risk factors decreased. The control group showed no improvements.

One researcher noted, “If the changes we saw in blood vessel function after eating blueberries every day could be sustained for a person’s whole life, it could reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease by up to 20%.”

Particularly in old age, maintaining a purpose in life is essential when losses, such as widowhood, retirement, and other age-related deficits and losses, become more common. It is vital for older individuals to prepare in middle adulthood for living longer and prevent Alzheimer’s disease, as this will help to ensure their physical and mental well being in later life.

Promote good consistently with a mindset beneficial to oneself and others help to build up morally valued personality traits, which is fundamental to one’s identity can lead to positive outcomes for oneself and/or others, and also contribute to the greater good.

For some people, this notion might contrast to the rule of “survival of the fittest”, which is a self-oriented, self-preservation concept, and has been flourishing in our individualistic culture. The main difference is that the behavior of living beings is not just self-oriented; rather it is a balance of self-interest and altruism. By promoting kindness using an automatic or mimicry approach, other than scolding or moral persuasion, people can intuitively reconnect with innate desires to help others and shift that balance.

Promoting cooperation and mutual aid, can also better ensure the survival of the species.

Even though promotion of kindness alone will not directly solve problems, it does enable people to feel less stressed and more connected to one another. The opportunities to find compromises and solutions may flow from the supportive society change other than lonely struggling individuals.

In summary, purpose in life is associated with cognitive outcomes and Alzheimer’s disease. It is modifiable, and offers a new treatment focus to reduce the increasing burden of Alzheimer’s disease in old age.

Walnuts are known to be a health-promoting food because they provide healthy unsaturated fats and are rich in the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), but the findings of this study indicate that they are a simple food that can also help combat stress.

For the randomized clinical trial, co-funded by the University of South Australia and the California Walnut Commission, the participant group who ate walnuts also experienced an increase in metabolic markers that are linked with protection against stress. Additionally, in females only, eating walnuts may have countered the negative effects of academic stress on the diversity of the gut bacteria.

Researchers in Brazil and the United Kingdom found that older folks who were deficient in the vitamin increased their risk of losing muscle strength by 78%.

For the study, researchers analyzed the data from more than 3,200 people in the U.K. aged 50 and older who did not yet have age-related muscle loss, known as dynapenia.

That muscle loss, which can be partly explained by atrophy, is a major risk factor for physical incapacity later in life, leading to falls, hospitalization, premature institutionalization and death.

Results were generally consistent across sex, race and ethnicity, age, and BMI categories, and for patients with cardiovascular disease or hypertension.
