California’s Public Higher Education Leaders’ Statement Regarding SCOTUS Decision on the Use of Race in College Admissions

California State University Interim Chancellor Jolene Koester, University of California President Michael V. Drake, M.D. and California Community Colleges Chancellor Sonya Christian made the following statement today (Thursday, June 29) regarding the SCOTUS decision on the use of race in college admissions: "As leaders of California's public higher education institutions, we are disappointed by the Supreme Court's decision this week to prohibit the use of race in college admissions. The benefits of campus diversity are clear: It leads to higher quality education for all by reflecting a plurality of ideas and perspectives, and it results in increased community benefit when diverse graduates enter the workforce.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core values at our institutions. We will continue to support programs and practices that seek to address historical inequities and ensure that our colleges and universities are reflective of California's rich and dynamic diversity. We remain committed to creating educational opportunities for all Californians so that they can reach their full potential and so that all California communities can thrive."

The second of two workshops scheduled will take place on July 12 at the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration on the CSUSB campus. Advance registration is required.

The Inland Empire non-profit, Building Wealth Initiative I.E. (BWI), will host two summer workshops at California State University, San Bernardino that will assist local high school graduates and adults in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) application for Pell Grant and Cal Grant state and federal funding, to attend college.

The workshops will take place on June 21 and July 12 at the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration on the CSUSB campus. Those wishing to attend must register in advance to reserve a seat and assistance from a trained advisor. Register online at Cash for College Registration.

“Every year millions of dollars in financial aid is being left unapplied for in inland Southern California, often due to the difficult application process,” said Roberta Albano, an executive board member for BWI and a professor at CSUSB. “Our goal is to help more of our students receive that money and realize their dreams.”

Added Lacey Kendall, a professor at CSUSB and BWI board member, “The workshops will allow local students and families to work with California Student Aid Commission-trained bilingual assistants to complete the process in each one-evening workshop.”

Each workshop will allow 35 attendees to use a workstation where they can complete the application with guidance from the trained assistants. The registration website includes all information and documents for students to bring with them.

Building Wealth Initiative I.E. is an organization focused on helping Inland Empire residents, small business owners and non-profits find greater success through free workshops, training sessions, business connections and grant opportunities.

"BWI is a unique organization for Inland Empire residents who want to find greater success in their business and personal lives,” said Albano.

BWI has partnered with Growing Inland Achievement and the California Student Aid Commission to make the workshops possible. Growing Inland Achievement is a cross-sector network of education, government, non-profit, and business partners in the Inland Empire, collectively aimed at a shared vision of increasing educational attainment and economic success.

“Partnerships like this are incredibly important for increasing equitable access to college for Inland Empire students,” said Jacob Poore, director of communication for GIA.

The international partnerships will be designed to enhance international understanding and deepen friendship between CSUSB and Lviv Polytechnic National University, and CSUSB and Krakow University of Economics.

California State University, San Bernardino has agreed to establish a partnership with two universities in Eastern Europe – Lviv Polytechnic National University, Ukraine, and Krakow University of Economics, Poland – and to initiate international collaborative activities to promote joint educational, scientific and cultural development.

The international partnerships will be designed to enhance international understanding and deepen friendship between CSUSB and Lviv Polytechnic National University, one of the largest technical universities in Eastern Europe, and CSUSB and Krakow University of Economics (KUE), one of five public economics universities in Poland, starting with cooperation in the area of entrepreneurship.

The agreements, in the form of memorandums of understanding, were signed at a meeting between officials from CSUSB, Lviv Polytechnic National University, and KUE in Krakow, Poland, which took place May 25-26.

Tomás D. Morales, president of CSUSB, said, “This is tremendous news and a wonderful opportunity that will ultimately benefit students, and the faculty and staff at both of our institutions. The memorandums of understanding reinforce my belief that students receive an incredible benefit from international studies. I look forward to our three institutions working together.”

Yurii Bobalo, professor, university leadership rector at Lviv Polytechnic National University, said, “International interaction and cooperation of the world’s universities play an important role in the world today. This allows for the integration of knowledge, opens new ways of addressing the problems that humanity is facing. The cooperation of the Lviv Polytechnic with the California State University, San Bernardino will provide an opportunity to exchange experience in the educational and scientific sphere and will open up new opportunities for the development of both universities.”

Added Stanisław Mazur, rector of Krakow University of Economics, “This alliance exemplifies our unwavering dedication to internationalization, enabling our students and researchers to gain invaluable experiences in a diverse and globalized world. By joining forces with CSUSB, we will enhance the scope of our academic programs, strengthen our research capabilities, and nurture a new generation of global leaders.”

The initial areas of international cooperation include developing programs with CSUSB’s School of Entrepreneurship at the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, Lviv Polytechnic National University’s Tech StartUp School, and KUE’s Małopolska School of Public Administration. The collaborations will promote joint activities and seminars for students and faculty from the three universities focused on entrepreneurship, research activities and innovation technology.

The partnerships will help enhance the CSUSB entrepreneurial program, which is recognized among the best in the globe. In recent national rankings from The Princeton Review, the entrepreneurial program was ranked in the Top 50 Graduate Entrepreneurship programs in the United States and globally.

“The agreements will help expand the global impact for Lviv National Polytechnical University, KUE and the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, our School of Entrepreneurship, and the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE),” said Tomás Gómez-Arias, dean of the Jack H. Brown College. “We look forward to working with our fellow academics and entrepreneurs with the exchange of research, best practices and growth programs.”
