A public consultation on plans to develop a green hydrogen production facility next to Pembroke Power Station has been launched by energy company RWE Generation UK.

The technology uses the electrolysis of water to split into its constituent elements, hydrogen for fuel and power, and oxygen.

The global electronic waste stream is outstripping the ability of recyclers to handle the volume of incoming material. Electric vehicles (EVs) will add even more waste to the recycling stream, as millions of EV battery packs reach their usable lifespan. The way forward is challenging, but new fuel cell projects undertaken by Honda illustrates how automakers can pursue new strategies to ease the strain on the EV battery lifecycle.

Partners from Belgium and the African nation of Namibia mapped out a plan to develop the continent’s hydrogen infrastructure for the production and export of the energy source as well as launching Africa’s first hydrogen-fueled vessel. It is part of an ambitious plan to make Namibia a frontrunner in the global green hydrogen economy and supply the alternative energy source both to passing ships and industrial users in Belgium, Germany, and other industrial clusters in Europe.

On Tuesday, 30 April, the results of the European Hydrogen Bank’s first auction were announced. Seven projects across the EU will receive a total of €720 million, with a plan to produce 1.58 million tonnes (Mt) of renewable hydrogen over ten years, avoiding more than 10Mt of CO2 emissions.

Winning bidders will secure funds per kilogram of hydrogen produced (Kg/H2), sourced from the EU Emissions Trading System (Innovation Fund), bridging the price gap between current production costs and the price that hydrogen offtakers are ready to pay. The premium requested by the awarded project promoters ranged between €0.37 and €0.48 per Kg/H2 – well below the €4.5 ceiling price – for projects located in Spain (3), Portugal (2), Norway (1) and Finland (1).

Electric motorcycles are all the rage, with lots of manufacturers big and small rolling out new innovations each year. But it goes without saying that even the most advanced EV motorcycles have their limitations.

Sure, charging technology has advanced leaps and bounds, but even the fastest chargers take way more time than filling up your tank—though Polestar is working on something pretty cool.

Of course, battery swapping technology also exists, but this necessitates dependence on infrastructure which can take years to build. As such, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are exploring how hydrogen fuel cells could pave the way for the future of two-wheeled mobility, despite a host of automakers giving up on the technology.

According to a report, Stellantis Hydrogen chief, Jean-Michel Billig, reported to say that hydrogen fuel-cell electric Ram HD 5500 trucks will be coming to market soon. The company did not specify the exact time frame, but Stellantis says these trucks will be produced at the company’s Mexico-based facility that currently builds Ram HD pickup trucks and chassis cabs.

Alberto Boretti was a senior research professor at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in 2021 when he first started discussing the idea of a hydrogen city in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The New Zealand-based independent tells pv magazine that it is now commercially feasible, as the city’s 200 MW of energy demand would necessitate 1 GW to 1.3 GW of solar and wind capacity, 509 MW to 997 MW of electrolysis capacity, and 145,000 MWh of hydrogen storage capacity.
