D'Aquila was the leader and founder of the D'Aquila crime family, which would eventually become the Gambino crime family. D'Aquila emigrated to the United States in 1906 and became a captain within the Morello crime family. After Giuseppe "the Clutch Hand" Morello was imprisoned in 1910 D'Aquila left the Morello family and formed the D'Aquila family.

D'Aquila had influence over various criminal activities, including extortion, racketeering, and illegal gambling operations.

On October 10, 1928, D'Aquila was shot dead on Avenue A in Manhattan. After his murder, D'Aquila's family was taken over by Manfredi Mineo.

Morello and his criminal organization engaged in various illegal activities, including counterfeiting money and extorting money from local businesses and individuals.

He was arrested and convicted of counterfeiting in 1910. He served time in prison but continued to be a prominent figure in organized crime after his release.

Giuseppe Morello was killed along with associate Joseph Perriano on August 15, 1930 during the Castellammarese War (1930-31).

Italian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who was convicted of multiple murders and was arrested in January after spending 30 years on the run, has died of cancer, officials said on Monday.

Messina Denaro, 61, was suffering from cancer of the colon at the time of his arrest. As his condition worsened in recent weeks, he was transferred to a hospital from the maximum-security jail in central Italy where he was initially held.
