the idea that journalism can save america if only they inform enough people is a perspective only held by journalists. america knows what's going on. they don't need to be told. and they're okay with it. only 1/3 of the electorate voted against trump in 2016, and approximately 1/3 voted against him in 2020, and it looks like about the same 1/3 will vote against him in 2024. and we've all seen what he's been doing.

it's not some secret that Trump is an authoritarian and republicans would rather cheat and win than lose a fair election. that's terrifying and horrible, but it's not news. everybody knows. and telling them isn't going to change anything.

The video captured by Cruise showed that the ambulance parked behind the Cruise and did not attempt to pass the robotaxi in the rightmost unblocked lane.

If there is a lane open, and the ambulance waits behind a parked car for 90 seconds instead of going around in the open lane, is that really the parked car’s fault?

I know blaming the self-driving car is a fun headline, but maybe focus on the vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian, rather than the one that wasn’t moving

america is already a democracy. if they wanted different leaders, they could elect some.

the problem is that they don't want different leaders. the leaders aren't the only bigoted fucks.

Can we all just stop pretending that “Elon musk says…” has any meaning at all? He says all kinds of shit. If twitter gets voice and video calling, that will be news when it happens.

But Elon musk saying it’ll happen doesn’t really have any more weight that me saying it’ll happen. And I’m nobody

"content recommendation is only for stupid people" is a brand new form of gatekeeping that i haven't heard before!

Because there’s a market for companies to sell bullshit like this. Cities are looking for solutions to make it look like they’re doing something, without actually taking any space from cars.

Being visible and weird is the point. Doing something isn’t. They’re selling a service of providing the appearance of “innovation” to municipal streets departments.

Mastodon is a good reminder of why algorithmic feeds exist

The option for a chronological feed is nice, but without an algorithm filling in the gaps it’s really hard to get started on there

Alternate version: Chinese authorities save city from flooding by diverting the waters to less populated areas, saving lives and minimizing financial losses

i doubt they want to take it that far, but i've got to assume at least some of putin's cronies are thinking if they goad him into something stupid enough, they can get rid of him and take over for themselves.
