Aside from Linux running on NASA hardware, phones and consoles. Does it run on ATM machines, PDAs and point of sale monitors?

I ask this because I've seen Windows being used in airport terminals and really old versions being used for cash machines as well. The crowdstrike problem made this more prevalent by seeing "non end user computers" using the OS.

Does Linux fill this niche as well do you know? I don't recall hearing any big name embedded distro used for those sorts of machines. Maybe Alpine Linux or NetBSD?

Thank you in advance for your input!

I should clarify I wasn't a upper level sys admin managing those servers, I just used them or maintained accounts being a rank and file technician

While I get the fundamental concept of DNS as a phonebook for your IPs. I am not sure why it is joked around if something goes haywire or someone breaks something.

Is it because if you get no DNS, people can't log in through their AD accounts, browse the Internet?

Afaik DNS is a bit of a rabbit hole topic, maybe that's why people joke about it due to DNS being this "No one really knows how this magic name matching box works"?

Please correct me, I'd genuinely like to know why this is prevalent from you guys.

Consider me a weeb but I like Japan, it has some truly beautiful nature and cuisines to try across the country.

Yes, there is a bit of that anime or gaming side to it, they've birthed many favourite nostalgic franchises of mine like Crash Bandicoot or Pokemon.

I also really like their architecture with their traditional houses and castles, the whole thing just seems really peaceful and tranquil given it it is a "quiet and polite" country.

Their country might be set in their ways but that is what I think makes the country special, keeping its traditions, beliefs and culture for many, many years.

My bro likes Spain because of their food and hot sunny weather 😎

What about you? What country do you like and why?

What is your pizza chain of choice?

Pizza Hut - Probably my favorite in terms of franchises since I like their salad bar and where I live I'd say their prices are more reasonable

Domino's - ehh I've only had them twice in my entire life and I think the price is a bit much for what you get, there are some cracking deals though that top Pizza Hut

Papa John's - So I hear from lads and ladies that this one more "cheaper" than the first two but I really can't say as we don't have any Papa John's in our city except for 1 small one along a small street.

Local Takeaway - Probably a 2nd close favourite since the takeaway I use always deliver fresh pizzas with a decent amount of toppings, not every takeaway shop who do pizzas are gonna be the same A+ quality though..

So my fellow pizza enjoyers, what's YOUR choice or listing?

Are there any big consequences apart from some annoyed reception manager if I pull reconsider the work and pull out of the planned interview?

I've went through the pre screening talk, but some details didn't sit right with me as none of it was openly laid out in the work posting.

I'd already accepted an interview time out of impulsiveness, I'm planning to duck out of it next week since the interview is much later.

TLDR - Is it fine to do this without any actual consequences?

It's gotta be the super mario man himself hailing from Georgia, Iosif Stalin.

  1. Wins against the nazis, doesn't elaborate, leaves, USSR becomes the sugar daddy of the eastern bloc

  2. Has a really cool looking moustache. No wonder he gets parodied as Mario

  3. Literally outwitted his enemies by playing the "innocent secretary" and gaining power.

  4. Was highly respected and feared by his enemies

  5. Is still parodied and memes have spread of him by both tankies and non tankies alike

  6. Is in Red Alert 1

  7. Massive troll in pranking the other party members, he would throw bits of fruit into their drinks.

  8. Isn't Hitler.

I'm no business graduate but you'd think Nintendo and Xbox who have closed their marketplaces on specific consoles I.e. 3DS market and 360 market.

There are some absolute bangers on there and old games in their possession as well. Since some of those games are still cherished, you'd think they would be helluva easy to profit by re selling or making a super duper old game free!

That would up both their PR and Profit.

I mean sure, there IS emulation, but we've all seen Nintendos stance on that clearly and their own product is a bit shoddy at best, subscription seems half baked and the mini consoles were overpriced pi zeros. Looking at you PlayStation Classic.

So how the hell are these giant firms not realising this despite the retro aesthetic of games going up these days?

Now I can be a cheapskate, but I always hunt for bargain deals and sales. For me it's with clothes or Blu Ray triple deals and charity shops.

Even if I was working I was still more a "check the sales first" kind of guy, didn't matter it was shoes, t shirts and jumpers I browsed that always.

It may be obvious like any normal person looking for some good deals, but generally I focus it always on that as I like to "quantify" more for my payment.

As for normal paying? Probably gonna be games, a suit or decent work clothing to go with the role to show some seriousness but that's about it.

Literally my entire wardrobe is sales clothing.

What about you? You more of a "sales hunter" kind of person or do you go for normal sold items often?.

Let me know!

For me, when I get books I often get the cheaper paperback option, give it a read.

Then if I really liked this book, I'll donate it to a charity shop or in my social circle and purchase the hardcover version.

The only gripe I have with hardcover though is some books come with that sleeve cover around it, you know the one, bit fidgety to use when reading.

Paperback I like if there's a book I am mildly interested in and I'll just go "whatever" I'll keep it as part a collection.

Paperbacks = cheap as chips but aren't as protected as hardcover, easy to fill up your collection or shelf with, might sell it if i want the luxurious version of that book. this is for me.

Hardcover = More luxurious as it provides proper protection to the pages and outer area of the book, Often comes with items as part of a collectors set. Usually I get the same book if I really enjoy it to add as a gem of my shelf.

What are your tastes? Same as me or do you lean more heavily to one or the other?

So when I worked in last 2 roles, I'd joke around and have a laugh with colleagues, the workplace culture of those places I guess was more relaxed, but I got that sense of lack of camaderie or fellowmanship from others too during my time working.

Sorry to be naive, but is it because some people look out for themselves and it's kind of "Yeah you're a funny guy but uh.. when shit hits the fan I ain't there with you" kind of shtick.

Not saying these guys are assholes or anything, but I just think with the current world in any work industry it seems to be tricky to make real friendships inside and outside of work.

I don't know if this just me but I notice that big distinction of the joking around and sharing the same invested topics (I.e. video games) but no more than that

TLDR - Confused if people are being genuine, but they don't really "care" in a sense?

Please let me know if I'm spouting gobbledygook, thank you.

I have uses the newer OS's of Mac but never the classic series that were numbered.

For those who have used apple computing back in the day, what was it like using it? Was it a lot more snappier and better user interface intuitiveness?

I say this because it always seemed to me that the macintosh operating systems seemed to be more.. "smooth sailing" than Bill's 50/50 BSOD contraptions (Windows ME anyone?)

Obviously things have changed a lot more with newer macos being more fisher priced down in looks but I'd really like to know what you guys thought about OS 8 or 9!

Thank you!

A man builds.. a parasite asks "where's my share?"

A man creates.. a parasite says "what will the neighbours think"

A man invents!.. the parasite says "Watch out, or you'll tread on the toes of god"

So, my fellow Lemmings, what is the difference?

Disclosure this is a joke question, ive been revisiting Bioshock too much recently this week

Does this possibly mean the end of x86 or will it be a coexisting scenario?

I still believe that as much as some people bark on about, X86 will not die for a long time, it will still keep kicking for some time.

If I'm not mistaken NestlΓ©, the firm that makes various brands of chocolate, are known or at least have been known to include slavery in really poor parts of the world.

When I look at a bottle or a cuddly packaged bit of chocolate, I shudder to think the shit conditions that a person, a child even was forced or on crap pay to produce that from the cocoa farming..

I did hear that they're killing off hyper threading which is a bummer but I guess those P cores would make up for it.

Didn't HP sell some fancy shmancy laptops that came with Ubuntu or some flavor of it? Think it was for developers but I thought that was the closest we gotten to commercially selling Linux based machines.

P.S. I could be wrong about this but I am sure this happened.

Nah, he's a pretty chill cat and from observing, is open to strangers. I live in a cul de sac area and the neighbours sometimes along the way take a bit of time petting him.

He's one smooth cat I tell you.

I don't bother using things like Copilot or other AI tools like ChatGPT. I mean, they're pretty cool what they CAN give you correctly and the new demo floored me in awe.

But, I prefer just using the image generators like DALL E and Diffusion to make funny images or a new profile picture on steam.

But this example here? Good god I hope this doesn't become the norm..

The problem is mate is that not all games have native Linux versions, If FIFA 17 were on steam, you could use proton on it but I believe it isn't.

It just comes with the territory of Linux that some games are windows only and can be finicky.

Minecraft however, should run fine on potato machines and with Linux, should have a native port you can install from say Flatpak.

When moving to the penguin train, he needs to write down what software and games he wants to use, and what might be omitted due to compatibility issues.

If the man wants to use Windows, let him be, he might reconsider in future about trying Mint again or another distro like Kubuntu.

Tying a tie for meetings, interviews etc.

I've always had issues trying to do myself from "my angle" if you know what I mean, I've always worn light blue or grayish dress shirts without the tie to interviews, or I'd just leave the tie spaced out so I can shrink it again when I got around my neck.

Still trying to get the hang of it!

The DLC I'll admit is what they are jokingly known for but someone could "find some treasure" can avoid that. But good answer nonetheless!

I am a chad htop enjoyer, I find btop and other alternatives too much on the eyes for me personally and HTOP has enough info for me to take a look at in terms of system resources.

Either that or I just use the regular gnome GUI system monitor lol

[–] Tekkip20 12 points 10 months ago

I prefer Flatpaks because it's a nice easy way of getting software without the chance of broken or missing dependencies for a program.

Much better than Snaps, snaps is flatpaks but MUCH worse and slower.
