Nope. Take this seemingly identical pic. You see them all the time on the net. But look at what's inside it. Add a password and there is your private space. Questions?

A maze is right...but it doesn't end there - play with the contrast & color.

Whether I open the image in a new tab or save directly, Firefox's PassLoc still gives me the content. The online version operates just the same. DiffImg is showing the presence of a message compared to the original image, below.

Can you read files? Files are a bit long, hence the stego. My public key is stored the same way.

Well I use it and if Chrome or FF can't handle it there's an add on (f or c). It's a matter of pressure - like from the camera makers, who's devices can now store more than old jpg can hold.

Inverting the brightness of official releases can help make out detail (f or c)
