I always wondered how civ plays as a boardgame. Is it not super complex to have 7 cities producing, 4 workers moving and god knows how many units flying around? Adding roads, city buildings, getting bonuses in on city but not the other and so forth.

They streamlined the game for sure, on every turn you only have 1 action, between: Production (cities or wonders), Science, Culture (only way to capture resources and natural wonders) , Trade (no road system) , War (max 2 armies), And growth (to build districts or to reinforce your territory).
The base game is pretty barebones, but with the terra incognita extension it gets very interesting (adds government, exploration, way more civilizations, districts, and so much more). My Homebrew extension is just there to add a bit of "fluff" with random event cards at the end of every player's action, for randomness into the game. It also limits the game time, adds great people, and a new way to score the game.
