Summary

French President Emmanuel Macron publicly corrected Donald Trump in the Oval Office after Trump falsely claimed Europe was only "loaning" money to Ukraine.

Macron clarified that Europe provided 60% of Ukraine’s wartime aid as grants and guarantees, not loans. Trump smirked but did not contest the correction.

The exchange came as Trump softened his stance on Russia, including voting against a UN resolution for Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine.

More of this from everyone please.

I’m not a fan of Macron, but at least he’s willing to call bullshit when bullshit is presented to him.

The Irish would like to show him how we kiss.

And he would look lovely in a Columbian necktie.

How long until Trump goes on TruthSocial to bitch about it and talk smack about Macron?

The summary at the top is misleading or outdated. Macron said that europe paid 60% of the costs including loans.

“No, in fact, to be frank, we paid,” Macron said to Trump. “We paid 60 percent of the total effort, and it was through, like the U.S., loans, guarantee, grants, and we provided real money, to be clear.”

Does anyone have an actual reference for the percentage of loans? Also percentage of european payments?

It's very hard to find these numbers because capitalist media wants to call loans "aid" instead of extortion.

edit: I found a chart that might support 60% of financial aid being from europe, but ofc it doesn't break down the loans/extraction.

edit2:

To date, the EU has provided the lion’s share of financial aid to Ukraine in the form of loans. ‘This has driven up war-torn Ukraine’s debt, jeopardising its macroeconomic stability, growth prospects and reconstruction,’ Pindyuk critically notes. wiiw is forecasting a budget deficit of 19% of GDP and a debt level of around 100% of economic output for the country this year. Compared to 2021, the national debt has doubled and is set to rise further.

edit3: Yep, the "aid" from the EU and France is almost entirely war profiteering according to this source.
