Hello deck-ers?!

I'm shaytan. After some time away from the internet, and now leaving behind reddit, I'm trying to revive this community as I very recently got a steamdeck, but I've been passionate about linux, linux gaming, and hardware for a while.

My plans for this place are to keep it aligned with piracy and steamdeck, but also take a lot more time into helping general support questions, and sharing resources and content related to the steamdeck and handheld gaming.

I'll try to prepare some posts for this place, and if possible have a good wiki soon!

Any help is welcome!

Roadmap
  • 1st -> ~~Mild overhaul of rules and look by the 2nd of February~~ Done.
  • 2nd -> General opening post for a proper re-start, 5th of February
  • 3rd -> Some pre-prepared posts/small guides dedicated to new users starting the 6th at a consistency of 1 a week at minimum.
  • 4rd-> A proper wiki for all things related to the steamdeck by the end of February at worst
  • 5th -> Some more hardware specific and more technical guides by march

As a disclaimer, I want this place to remain piracy oriented, but also more valuable for everyday use, so ideally this place should have more general deck content between piracy posts

Hey all,

flwwhtrbt here (if you need to confirm it, you can probably reach out to my friend agaric on the SDP sub-reddit, or even go to my mastodon and reach out there - where I can confirm this in person!)

Nice to see the community kinda in place here, though it feels quite ghost-town-y

What plans are in place here?

Hello! I'm writting some guides myself, as I'd rather compile some content that I have verified and is not a copy paste from other places. Still, I'm working, slowly, but working.

You're welcome in here, we can talk on DMs

I'd love a sticky post explaining the best way to get games

A list of sources will be on the wiki, but since that will take some time, I'll try to make a shorter post about this topic soon!

I suppose adding a way or two of installing games to run under proton will also be useful!

It might be worthwhile to pay attention to how one can find a source. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to your recommendations! But I'm thinking just in case that list faces some kind of censorship, to there's still knowledge regarding how to go about looking for a source that might be somewhat harder to silence.

Anyway, had no idea this community existed! This will be my first subscription, I think; up until know I've been content to just scroll the All feed. 😅

Oh! As a newbie, Wine had an unexpectedly steep learning curve at times. So I would definitely recommend guides or explanations of stuff like "what is a Wine prefix, and when might I want to customize that instead of settling for the default?"

I hadn't really thought about piracy for SteamDeck as I don't own one yet, but I do have Linux PCs. Are there obstacles on SteamOS to be aware of or is it pretty much the same as running anything on any Linux?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Mostly the same as any linux distro. The biggest issue usually are users, since linux gamers usually are tech enthusiasts and understand what they are doing to a degree, but the steam deck is the 1st of its kind to make so many non tech enthusiasts have to dig into linux (because of it comming preinstalled instead of windows)

So that's that. Also steamdeck has specific issues but at the same time is easier to troubleshoot since it is the same system

As a newcomer, working with an immutable distro took some getting used to for sure. Once I learned some of the basic things like unlocking the filesystem so I can pull the list of packages, that kinda stuff, it got a lot easier!

Yes please!
