Star Trek certainly seems to think so.

Remember when they called it the great war as if it'll be the only one? Good times.

Having just come out of a Global pandemic

Ending the decade with a global depression.

History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes.

[–] LovableSidekick 17 points 1 month ago

I've always like this metaphor. Alexander Woolcott called striking coincidences "the universe caught in the veriest act of rhyming."

It's like poetry

yeah, the very same conflicts and tensions we had in the world back then are still here now...

Those who know history are doomed to repeat it with those who don't.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The only thing we learn from history ... is that we don't learn anything from history

Robert Evans?

First season of True Detective.

One of the best shows ever, very dark and brutal at points.

[–] Alexstarfire 2 points 1 month ago

I disagree.

I love the Twain quote but I’m also a fan of this contemporary parallel observation; the number one thing you learn by studying history is that humans never learn a goddamn thing from history

We truly are nothing but a bunch of barely evolved monkeys. We're even smart enough to know better, but too stupid to do anything about it. "Hey, that's a brick wall dead ahead." Humanity at large:

Obviously you've never heard of the Time Cube, invented by the "wisest man on Earth". ("My wisdom so antiquates known knowledge, that a psychiatrist examining my behavior, eccentric by his academic single corner knowledge, knows no course other than to judge me schizophrenic." - Gene Ray).

You can still find his (now gone) site on the Internet Archive.
His ramblings are unfortunately very racist and homophobic too.

One of his diagrams that explain everything:

All circles are flat.

History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes. I think that was from Mark Twain.

In fact, it seems like nothing has changed!

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not true, we also have climate change now

Can't wait for for the 2120s when we do all this again but the nukes have pure fusion igniters and probably some kind of pseudo intelligent AI guidance systems so their proliferation can't be prevented and they can evade anti ballistic missile systems.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

nobody changed anything, so why should have anything changed? development does not appear by pure wish or magic, nor by letting time passing by, people have to do it, or it just doesn't get done.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

"If we could perceive time as it truly was, what reason would grammar professors have to get out of bed?"

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

Lemmy comments like to rhyme.

So sad we didn't get assault of Gelendzhik Palace in 2017. Now Putin destroys not only Russia.

Patriarchy yet lives, and so time remains still
