1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack members of the community for any reason.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • These rules are somewhat loosened when the subject is a public figure. Still, do not attack their person or incite harrassment.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn. Even if you watch it on a Linux machine.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't fork-bomb your computer.

God doesn't work. Linux does. Prayers to God are left unanswered. Prayers to Linux are accepted via well defined interfaces and answered if you have the correct permissions.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 8 months ago

God actually does answer prayers but they get blocked by ufw

Religion is about shit that is not real. Linux is about good engineering and open source software.

Big fat downvote for this pathetic attempt st being provocative.

no, linux is the kernel. "free software" is the religion

(but seriously, theres nothing here that could be called a religion, that would be like saying d&d is a religion or a cult because a lot of people like it, or like calling any community a religion. it makes no sense)

[–] [email protected] 25 points 8 months ago (1 children)

The difference between Linux and a cult is that Linus Torvalds actually did what he said he'd do.

Even free software isn't, because free software delivers objective, non-placebo benefits to people, whether they "practice it" or not. Even when they don't consciously participate or are even aware of it.

If it is a religion, then it is a very fragmented one.

    [–] tigerjerusalem 30 points 8 months ago (2 children)

    So, exactly like a religion.

My brother in Christ, have you seen the history of the 3 major religions on this planet?

    [–] esc27 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Do you have any idea how many denominations of Christianity there are? And most of them are open source.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Where's the Linux orgy's guys? Cult's are supposed to have orgy's.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Prepare to be disappointed. This is how Linux disciples have sex (SFW).

You have to become a 4th level sysadmin, and donate at least 3 accepted PR to the kernel in chief in order to get an invite

[–] [email protected] 26 points 8 months ago (3 children)

The Linux source, coc and governance continues to be improved upon, while the religious scripture and institutions mainly stay fixed

People can and do make idols of anything, but Linux in itself is not a religion.

    [–] FuglyDuck 18 points 8 months ago (1 children)

    Torvold's is still alive right?

Cults are religions whose founders are still alive.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Not rather Richard Stallman (if we're not talking about the kernel)?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago

And Stallman took skin from his foot, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’

[–] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago

He's the one who was prophesized in the GNU testament.

If Linux is a religion like Christianity then I expect Jesus to appear in front of me right now and double my fishes.

    Linux works, Christianity does not.

Replace Bash with Fish. Open two terminals.

    echo "Check mate".

Might be thinking of TempleOS there.

    [–] Dasnap 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Does using Linux, Windows, and MacOS simultaneously make me some kind of faith-exploring pilgrim?

    [–] esc27 11 points 8 months ago (1 children)

So which OS is which religion? Right now I'm thinking unix=Judaism (older, predecessor to newer oses), linux=Christianity (distros=demominations, roots in unix.), macos=Islam(jobs is their prophet, roots in unix). Not sure about Windows. I guess maybe it could be Christianity and Linux Hindu or Buddhist...

[–] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Windows can't be Christianity, it's not fragmented enough. It's either Scientology because it's tightly controlled and without meaningful denominations. Or Buddhism from a very western point of view (i.e. oblivious to the denominations and local variations).

A religion is just a cult with more followers.

It's the filthy Arch heretics that are a cult! All true believers use Mint!

Repent heretic! Return to your roots and embrace Debian!

I feel like ideology is more accurate, but alright

    [–] Leg 8 points 8 months ago

I used the word philosophy, but yes. I think that's a more appropriate word than religion/cult.

    [–] excitingburp 7 points 8 months ago

Absolutely. The only difference is that the benefits aren't imaginary, they are quite tangible.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago

And with the countless different distributions, its a polytheistic one.

So? (says while using terminal with gibberish commands to mere mortals)

There hasn't been a debian update for 2000 years so...
