/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Yesterday one of our community members was being harassed by an antisemitic asshole (elsewhere on Lemmy, not here). The dickwad's post was promptly nuked by the mods, but not before I got a brief chance to tell them to fuck off. That interaction inspired this meme.

If you see someone being harassed, speak up! Don't let them talk to your friends like that, and don't let your local community turn into a Nazi bar! Stand together

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
—Martin Niemöller (spoken by Niemoller, a German pastor, in 1946, while he traveled on a lecture tour in the western zones of Allied-occupied Germany after the war)

The lesson is the lesson of not speaking out or not standing up for injustice no matter how small. If we all just idly stand by while minor injustices occur to other people, eventually those injustices will grow and fester to affect us.

So, whenever and where ever you see or hear injustice ... speak up and speak out. Those powerful few who cause the injustices gamble on the fact that no one or not enough people will ever speak out against them.

Usually you may feel alone in speaking out but often, others around you feel the same but they are too afraid to be the first to speak up and often they are also willing to support the first one who speaks out.

No one ever knows how you feel until you speak up.

Thank you, the Niemoller quote tends to get overused a lot, but it's vital that people understand it. The world described in the quote isn't theoretical, it actually happened. It's based on his experiences, because he was silent.

No one ever knows how you feel until you speak up.

I agree wholeheartedly. I suppose I'm just getting more and more tired of fascism as I get older, but people need to speak out more when they see injustice. Don't let fuckin Nazis off the hook, call them out on their bullshit. You don't have to be polite, you're dealing with people who want to and are actively trying to exterminate you. Tell them to fuck off! Others will join.

I don't mind overusing, repeating or restating things that are important ...... it works the same as advertising ... the more you repeat something, the more cemented and reinforced the idea or image becomes in a person's memory and thoughts.

The information may be old and familiar to you and me but hopefully it may catch the attention of someone who has never read it before.

Think of it in the same way we identify Coca-Cola, a drink that many people in the world know as a famous soda brand .... instead of advertising for sugar water, I repeat information that can at least change lives .... and save lives at its best.

Keep pointing out the wrongs of our world .... I'm calling out as much as I can right next to you.

TIL Anton Yelchin was in a punk band.

Reference for the curious: https://www.antonyelchinofficial.com/hammerheads/

That said, I'm not seeing that they did a cover of Nazi Punks Fuck Off.

[–] dr_scientist 44 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I think that's a still from Green Room, a very good and very disturbing film with none other than Sir Patrick Stewart as a Nazi/replacement theory Svengali-type character. The joke being the band in the movie is booked unaware into a straight up nazi punk club, and end up singing that song. Things develop from there. I hope I got that right, but that's my memory.

I didn't know he played in a real band. Cool beans!

[–] smokin_shinobi 17 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That is definitely from Green Room. Great movie with a lot of awesome actors and some absolutely brutal violence.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

Yeah, it is really graphic. Not for the squeamish.

[–] xantoxis 11 points 9 months ago

Not quite a spoiler, but they knew exactly what they were doing when they played that song. They deliberately picked it to antagonize the Nazis they had already seen in the audience.

Ahahahahahaha Today I Learned Anton Yelchin (RIP) was in a punk band. The screenshot is from Green Room, where his fictional band covers Nazi Punks Fuck Off in front of a crowd of white power skinheads. Movie also stars Patrick Stewart as the head Nazi. I didn't know Anton was in an actual punk band IRL LOL

[–] FlyingSquid 5 points 9 months ago

Oh nice, I'll have to watch it. Thanks.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

It’s an alternate universe after all, can’t expect all the details to line up perfectly.

[–] DigitalTraveler42 14 points 9 months ago (1 children)

RIP Anton, gone way too soon.

[–] weariedfae 5 points 9 months ago

In our household we choose to believe that he didn't die. His cover as [mythical creature] was blown and he had to go into hiding. It is a comforting lie.

Can someone explain the "Russian" thing with v's and w's?

It's weird this is a stereotype. If they can pronounce both why the switch? This isn't German where the th sound just doesn't exist.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Pretty sure "B", the Russian 'v' sound, is bilabial (lips touching each other) rather than labiodental (bottom lip touching teeth) like in English. Try making your lips almost touch, and pronouncing 'v' otherwise the same. It's similar, but more subtle, and easily misinterpreted as 'w'. I'm no linguist tho.

Green Room is underrated even for A24. Crazy tense. Patrick Stewart also as the bad guy is terrifying.

[–] verity_kindle 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Aside from the character Chekov being huggable, I don't get the punchline.

[–] DigitalTraveler42 2 points 9 months ago

Check out the movie Green Room

I kinda miss this crew. Why did the TV show never happened? I'm not sure if DSC was a better replacement initially.
