The only similar-ish case I can remember is Spa 1998. Several teams (Tyrrell, Arrows, Prost) had both of their cars involved but only one spare car per team available for the restart.

I also vaguely remember that at some point during the 50s a driver gave his car to his teammate during the race (driver switches were allowed back then).

But those are nowhere near the current situation. It's really bonkers. If Williams isn't confident that SAR can perform well then why did they sign him at all?
