I was wondering what people have been doing to share videos! It doesn't seem like uploading locally to the instance is currently an option, right?

Use a regular video hosting service and post a link.

If you have a large video that you want to share with the public, and you don't want to either (1) host it on a commercial video service or (2) pay for the costs of bandwidth to serve it, maybe consider BitTorrent?

I spent some time looking and found that Pixelfed and Peertube are recommended. Turns out there's a pixelfed.social which seems good as long as you make your posts unlisted and keep yourself off the public directory (unless you want that).

If you're sharing the link on Lemmy, why would you want it unlisted there?

(Not saying you're wrong, I never heard of pixelfed before β€” just wondering.)

That's a good question. I don't know, but I figure people using Pixelfed might not generally be the target audience for what I'm sharing on Lemmy. But that's just personal preference I guess?

I haven't used Pixelfed before either! It seems a lot like Instagram, basically?
