Why do the instances keep going down? It makes me think that this is not a reliable social network, but the alternatives are not as good.

Sadly there are a lot of DDOS attacks happening towards all the major instances. I believe the Lemmy devs are working on ways to negate this with upcoming updates but it is a continuing issue.
